The New Year Brings New Leadership

Iris TorresAfter three years of strong leadership, Iris Torres has announced her retirement as of January 1st, 2011 as Executive Director. Iris was recruited to NJFFB as Program Director in 2005 to help in the organizational transformation designed to cope with the growing incidence of adult vision impairment. She designed and implemented a vision rehabilitation program that has been recognized for its comprehensive focus on all facets of vision impairment.

Succeeding her as Executive Director is David Feinhals, who has been NJFFB's Program Director since joining in 2007. He is one of only 13 Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapists in NJ. As Program Director, David has successfully run NJFFB's Comprehensive Program. In addition, he designed and implemented the innovative Essential Low Vision Program which launched in 2009.

David FeinhalsIn 2011, he intends to spearhead outreach efforts throughout northern New Jersey by offering programs in various communities, as well as at NJFFB. "We have set up our first community-based Health & Wellness program for adults with vision loss in Montclair," stated Mr. Feinhals. "This program will be very accessible by train and bus, making it convenient for individuals who have mastered the orientation and mobility skills we teach at our Center in Denville." NJFFB will also be offering the Essential Low Vision Program off-site at different venues later in 2011.

Prior to joining NJFFB, Mr. Feinhals worked for DeWitt & Associates as an Associate for Evaluation and Training helping adults with low vision utilize assistive technology. He has also taught children with autism at private schools in New Jersey.

He is a graduate of Rutgers University with a BA in Psychology and earned his Masters of Science in Special Education with a certification in Vision Rehabilitation from Hunter College.
